A flowing yoga class that links postures together to create sequences. You will move smoothly from one posture to another, to create a vinyasa flow of movement.
I have been introduced to yoga during my university years. During the first yoga class I felt challenged, exhausted but at the end of class the reward was astounding, and it soon became a regular routine in my life. During those first years of yoga exploration I had been inspired by many wonderful teachers, and by the time I finished my Masters degree in Musicology in Ottawa, I felt I had a new calling.
I immersed myself in a 200-hr Hathat Yoga teacher training in Ottawa (Rama Lotus Yoga Centre), which was followed by 500-hr Hatha – Akhanda – Classical Kundalini training in India with Yogi Vishvketu. When I moved to Calgary I discovered the beautiful heart-centered and life affirming style of Anusara Yoga founded by John Friend. This new style offered a yet deeper transformation in my yoga practice and personal life; therefore I explored it deeper through a 200-hr Anusara YTT with Martin and Jordan Kirk.
Today, I happily incorporate all these various styles into my teaching, which results in a diverse blend of strong alignment instructions, heart themes, conscious focus on breath and a focus on the unity of mind, body and spirit, which is the ultimate goal and meaning of yoga. Although I guide people through yoga sequences, I like to point out that there is a much more important and wiser teacher within each of us that is waiting to be re-discovered and listened to. I believe, a good yoga class - among its countless other beautiful benefits - helps us to make this intimate connection to our beautiful inner guru.
It’s all about the Party! – Dance, shake and groove away calories in a fun dance style aerobic class that is designed to be a party! Its for everyone and its fun, fun fun!!!
I am a Personal Trainer, Fitness Instructor Specialist, Fitness Model, Body Combat, Body Jam, and Zumba / Zumbatomics instructor, CPR, Bosu Balance training, Core and Stretching and Flexibility training, and I have recently completed a 200 hr. Asthanga Vinyasa Yoga teacher’s training. Most importantly, I am a mom of 2 busy children and I understand how important it is to include ourselves in our list of priorities.
In 2008, I set a major fitness goal, I decided to compete in a fitness show, to achieve this goal I set up a very disciplined meal plan, and a boot camp workout program, in a matter a 2 months I had transformed my body, I feel very proud of myself for taking this challenge and I know that if I could do it, anybody can too! I placed 1st. in the Masters category for Swimming suit model at Wow Fame 2008 World championship in Toronto.
I am lucky and fortunate to be involved in the fitness industry and be able to reach to all kinds of women who are looking into improving their health, wellness and fitness, everybody has different goals, for some it might be to have more energy to play with their kids, or to look good for an event, or to improve their self-esteem, whatever the reason, fitness should be a constant in everybody's life.
My philosophy on fitness is simple: Set goals...focus...and succeed! I love the power that comes from discipline, challenge, and the fun of training. My fitness goals are to continue to expand my knowledge of healthy living, and to share my experience with others. I enjoy being with my family and friends, nothing can top a day at the park with my husband and kids, ... I also enjoy taking some time by myself to reenergize, celebrate my accomplishments and set new goals.
Combine step and weights to create a great all over workout. The step patterns are intermediate and the pump section will tone your muscles and improve your shape.
Judy’s love of group exercise began when she was in university and has carried over into a fitness leadership career that has spanned over 20 years. Judy became certified to teach group exercise classes in 1985, and has not looked back! She currently teaches the Monday 9:30 am Step and Pump class at Canyon Meadows, teaching in her favorite modality- step! Judy’s philosophy for group exercise has remained the same throughout her years of teaching- make the class fun, relevant, educational, safe, challenging, encouraging and energetic- and always be the best instructor you can be.
Judy holds a Bachelor of Science degree plus a Bachelor of Management degree from the University of Lethbridge, and loves to travel internationally, presenting workshops in cycling, aquatic exercise and group exercise to other fitness professionals. She is an active AFLCA (Alberta Fitness Leadership Certification Association) Trainer, where she facilitates courses as well as trains and certifies leaders in group exercise, aquatic exercise, and resistance training. Judy is also the YMCA representative on the AFLCA Board of Directors. For 10 years, Judy worked full time for YMCA Calgary, and continues to provide mentorship, coaching and leadership to YMCA Fitness Trainers via her role as a YMCA Training Educator. Judy is a National Trainer for Keiser (indoor cycling), a Stott Pilates instructor, a Fusion certified leader, and holds her Level 1 Ashtanga Yoga certification through Trinity Yoga.
In her “non-fitness” life, Judy is blessed to have two beautiful daughters, and takes care of the finances and office management for her husband’s company. Judy shares her passion for fitness and love of movement through the classes she teaches, and measures her leadership success through the success of her participants. “Some people never find that role that matches their passion and talents, but I definitely have found that through fitness leadership and course facilitation.” I am truly honoured to assist my class and course participants with their goals, and to feel that I have played a small role in their success. I can’t imagine not doing this for another 20 years!”
Anusara (a-nu-sar-a), means “flowing with Grace,” “flowing with Nature,” “following your heart.” American yogi John Friend founded Anusara in 1997 and it’s a lovely combination of yoga asanas that focus on alignment and vinyasa flows that emphasize heart opening. No previous anusara experience required
I started to practise yoga with Nora Maskey in January of 2001. It is through my studies with Nora that I was introduced to the practise of Anusara Yoga®. I am an Anusara-Inspired™ yoga teacher registered at the 200 hour level with Yoga Alliance. I have taught yoga for two years. I teach classes at Unihealth Group, and I am a yoga therapist with Innovative Health Group.
Anusara Yoga® is a modern style of hatha yoga which draws us into alignment with our intrinsic good nature using physical postures, breath and movement. I feel better when I practise yoga: I am more relaxed, more fun-loving, and generally make more sense to myself and to others.
Yoga is a way of realizing and celebrating we are one. Yoga is not an abstract concept separate from us or an experience of removing ourselves. Instead, yoga is the experience of connection and relating to ourselves in our lives in richer and more meaningful ways. A good way to understand yoga is to give it a try.
Inhale: yoga is you Exhale: you are yoga

Kathy has been interested in every activity available to her from a young age: gymnastics, volleyball, basketball, dance, swimming, whatever she could do - she did. During college she found her gym sessions to be boring and repetitive, then a friend suggested she attend a group fitness class. It turned out to be a Step class and after 1 session she was hooked! Kathy couldn't believe sweating her way through an hour-long workout could be so much fun. After two years of being inspired by talented instructors, she decided that teaching was her calling. Kathy moved to Calgary in the fall of 2006 and began her journey to becoming a qualified instructor. She took her Can-Fit-Pro Fitness Instructor Specialist Certification under the guidance of our very own Michelle Parker. She then continued to mentor with Michelle at Spa Lady, and completed the Apprenticeship Program with Simone Hodgkinson. She began subbing in Summer 2007 and is now very excited to be a part of the Spa Lady team!

Step, 1 Minute Sculpt, Iron Reps, and Yoga are just a few of the classes that I have enjoyed teaching over the past 10 years. I have been fortunate to have attended many great fitness conferences and workshops over the years and enjoy sharing this information with my clients. I love a great workout and have always considered fitness as my ‘fun job’ and it’s so gratifying to share that passion with others and watch them find strength they didn’t know they had.
As a child I was always physically active, and even with this involvement I have always struggled with my weight. It is something that I can relate to when I work with clients who are struggling to lose weight and make the lifestyle changes necessary to maintain what they have accomplished. I enjoy sharing tips and suggestions on what I have learned over the years and love to see someone transform not only their body but their life!
Now that I have two young children it has only reinforced my commitment to living a healthy lifestyle. With this shift in priorities I am very excited to now be able to do my ‘fun job’ as my regular job. I firmly believe that finding the motivation to make some changes is the first and biggest step in achieving your goals and love to help provide that motivation to my clients and put the fun back into their fitness routine. Whether you are new to the gym and looking for some help or are looking for a new way to challenge your body I would love to help.
