Fitness Leader of the Month
Megan Swidley

Congratulations, Megan!

Century Park Fitness Manager Holly says Megan is very talented with her program design and really cares about her clients. She is doing very well in her own fitness program and looks amazing. Megan is very dedicated and hard working.

Today's Schedule
9:30 am - 10:00 am

30mins of great cardio work suitable for all levels of fitness. A range of training styles can be used (hi/lo, knockout, athletic, step, etc.) but the main focus is Cardio, Cardio, Cardio!

I have been with SPA LADY since 1993, as a group fitness instructor and now recently club coordinator of our Century Park location. What motivates me is our members; their energy, their ability to overcome setbacks and to take that next step to their goal(s). Whatever that goal may be, I want to be there to help them achieve it. If it is just to step foot into one of our classes, that can be huge for them. Once they are in they are hooked. I am a better instructor because of them, our members challenge me to grow and develop my skills as an educator of fitness. I attend workshops, courses and education days to bring new information and workouts to them. That way we are all growing together in this industry.

I have been trained to teach a variety of styles. I enjoy teaching all of them; high/low, step, knockout, strength, bootcamp, Pilates, yoga, Zumba, metabolic training, and HIIT. They are all different, unique, and challenging in their own way. I want the members to walk away from my classes feeling good and wanting more.

In 2003, I graduated from Grant MacEwan for Massage Therapy. I enjoy learning and understanding the body that I had to go back to school. Since then I have been working as a RMT in the west end.

I am very passionate about fitness, lifestyle and the role that I play. I love it!

10:00 am - 10:30 am

It is all about the Party! – Dance, shake and groove away calories in a fun dance style aerobic class that is designed to be a party! It is for everyone and it is fun, fun fun!!!

10:45 am - 11:45 am

A weight-training workout using a barbell and plates in the group fitness studio. It achieves maximum results and is the quickest way to get in shape. Our experienced instructors will focus on technique for safety and use their dynamic energy to power you through this amazing full body workout.

I was born on the beautiful island of New Providence in the Bahamas, and lived there until I was 21 years old. Dance has always been an important part of my life; however, I did not begin formal training until the age of sixteen. I was trained in ballet and jazz, and took workshops in West African dance at the Bahamas National Dance School. As a student at the National Dance School I acquired the technique and discipline need to become a professional dancer. One year after enrolling at the NDS, I was accepted as a member of the National Dance Company. A few years later I got my first job as a performer at Super Clubs Breezes Resort on Nassau. This was also the start of circus career. Breezes Resort has a flying trapeze, and I was one of the original Circus Team members, I danced in the nightly variety shows and taught juggling, trampoline, and trapeze lessons to our resort guests for three years. With the hope of becoming a featured dancer in one of the shows on New York's infamous Broadway, I resigned my position at Breezes Resort and moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to fulfill my dream. Summer of 1997, I auditioned and was accepted as a member of Philadanco's apprenticeship company (Philadelphia Dance Company). Unfortunately this would be the end of my dance career. Philadanco's apprenticeship company members were not paid and the class schedule was very strict and time consuming, so I was left with the choice of following my dance dream, or finding employment to support myself. I chose to find a job and enrolled at Montgomery County Community College, spring 1998. After earning an Associates Degree at MCCC, I transferred to Temple University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in January, 2003. My degree made me very employable, but each job I took did not fill an emptiness I felt on the inside. January of 2010, I decided to pursue a vision I had some years earlier. That vision was to create my own dance fitness workout. Acting upon the advice of a sister in-law I registered for Can-Fit Pro's Fitness Instructor Certification course, and was certified as a Fitness Instructor Specialist May 18, 2010. In the months leading up to my fitness instructor course I took some Zumba classes for inspiration, because it was also dance inspired. Shortly after I took those Zumba classes I was informed of a Zumba Certification coming to Edmonton, so I registered, but by this time was very skeptical. On May 1, 2010, my skepticism was transformed into fulfillment, passion, and love during my Zumba Basic course with Robyn Holm. Robyn's passion, professionalism and skills brought me to tears a few times during the course, and filled an emptiness I was carrying for 13 years. After my Zumba course on May 1, I not only received the inspiration to fulfill my vision, but I left as a Certified Zumba Instructor and a new man.

It is all about the Party! – Dance, shake and groove away calories in a fun dance style aerobic class that is designed to be a party! It is for everyone and it is fun, fun fun!!!

I\'ve always had a passion to keep moving. Whether it is dance, sports or a combination of both, sitting still makes me go crazy. A moving body is a happier body and this is the philosophy that I enjoy bringing to my clients and classes. I graduated in 2004 from the University of Alberta with a degree in Physical Education and an advanced certificate in Athletic Therapy and since then have helped many athletes from all performance levels to get back into their sports. I now enjoy bringing that same knowledge to the general public because I believe that inactivity is an injury waiting to be rehabilitated. I love seeing the smiling faces after a class or workout knowing that they have just helped their bodies be healthier and happier and I couldn\'t be more excited knowing that I was a part of that.

Combine step and weights to create a great all over workout. The step will be easy to follow but intense (with low intensity options for beginners) and the strength section will tone your muscles and improve your shape. Perfect for everyone.

Elise is new to Spa Lady. Please offer her a warm welcome

6:35 pm - 7:35 pm

A combination of boxing and kickboxing movements using easy to follow choreography. This class may incorporate kickboxing equipment such as heavy bags, gloves and targets to improve technique. This class is a sure thing to tone up your upper body and abdominals.

I have a passion for health and wellness and have been involved in some kind of physical activity whether it be dancing, sports or kickboxing since I was 3 yrs old. I started with Spa Lady in 1998 as a trainer on the floor which then evolved into becoming a member in which I was a regular to all the classes, and then eventually a group fitness instructor in 2004. I trained at Panther gym in boxing and kickboxing for over 7 years and now I specialize in the kickboxing classes at Spa Lady but also teach Sprint and Combo classes as well. I have been involved with Spa Lady for so long because I truly believe that it is a wonderful facility, the staff are fabulous, the quality of instructors are truly amazing and I absolutely love the members!

In my life outside of Spa Lady, I am the proud mother of 2 beautiful girls named Atya and Xenya and a wife to my super supportive husband Ian. I have been a nurse specializing in psychiatry for over 7 years until I retired from my nursing career in September 2011 to be at home with my girls and to run my business full time promoting the 90 Day Health Challenge and nutrition counseling. Outside of work and teaching I also captain a volleyball team in the winter months and coach and captain an ultimate frisbee team during the summer. Physical activity and promoting health will always be a part of my life and I am committed to continuing my education as an instructor so that I can continue to deliver fun and dynamic classes to my amazing Spa Lady students!

It is all about the Party! – Dance, shake and groove away calories in a fun dance style aerobic class that is designed to be a party! It is for everyone and it is fun, fun fun!!!

I am a firm believer in keeping fit & healthy. I have been a Spa Lady member for about 20 years and have always been very active enjoying many sports and activities, from water skiing to downhill skiing and swimming to biking, I'll try anything that makes me move. Last year I put three sports together & competed in the World Masters Triathlon event (swim 1.5K, bike 40K, run 10K). I came home with "GOLD".

I have been teaching group fitness since Sept 2000. I started teaching bootcamp (AT) then moved on to teach, BFL, Step, SSP, and am presently teaching Sprint Circuit, Spa Ball & Body Shop at the Heritage location. I love teaching group fitness. To see the smiles on your faces as you push yourself to your limit or as you master a new move, and as we cool down the look of accomplishment and satisfaction that fills the room. To hear your stories of weight loss, strength gained, the smaller sizes you are wearing, how much better you sleep, you feel healthier, you eat better, how much you LOVE coming to classes and most of all, that you feel so good about yourself. If you feel good about yourself everything else falls into place.

Members asked "what keeps me motivated and where do I get my energy." -I don't take my body & health for granted. It is up to me to keep it healthy and active no one else can do it for me. (At 5 yrs old a bike accident should have killed me, Dr.s amazed at recovery, developed severe asthma at 20yrs old refused to give in to it, kept active, 15yrs later Dr.s can's believe remission. -Attending fitness & nutrition conferences/courses, keeps me fresh & up to date on whats new. -I can't stop getting older, but I can choose to stay young, mind, body & soul. **YOU, the members, your enthusiasm, energy and smiles. The more you want the more I will give. There is much truth in the saying "energy breeds energy". Just come to one of my classes, you'll see!! I leave you with this, "The BODY achieves what the MIND believes". "ACHIEVING starts with BELIEVING" Believe in yourself, trust yourself.
